History

The thirty-three square mile area where Bridgewater, NJ now stands used to be in the possession of a local Indian tribe. The land was successfully purchased under the charter of King George II of England in 1749. Bridgewater was incorporated in 1899 and is a modern suburban municipality having a balanced residential and commercial use. In the early years, the city was known as a farming town. The present Somerville and Raritan were once part of Bridgewater until they broke away from the township years after the chartering.
